YMCA READS!

20150701_093903Reading changes children’s lives. Learning to read opens young eyes and minds to a world full of possibilities. In a world with many troubles, though, some children fall behind their classmates at a very young age when it comes to literacy.

That’s where YMCA READS! comes into action. Our free, volunteer-driven program nourishes the minds of early elementary schoolchildren who need the most help and sets them on a path for future learning. Whatever reason their abilities lag, whether due to problems at home or their own abilities, YMCA READS! uses proven, research-based tools to ignite the minds of these students whose teachers have said they are at risk for lifelong reading difficulties.

Thanks to our volunteers who meet twice-a-week with no more than two students at a time, Y READS! has been able to create, positive, nurturing environments within our local schools for the last 11 years.

Currently the program operates in 15 public schools, 11 participating YMCAs in 12 counties in Florida. YMCA READS! is implemented in partnership with the Florida State Alliance of YMCA’s Foundation, Inc. and the local YMCA’s in Florida.
